Riverdale is one of The CW’s newest and most popular shows. It is based off the Archie comics and provides a fresh take on it. Warning, there are spoilers for the episode in this review, so read carefully.
The episode focuses on Jughead’s birthday, Archie’s parents’ divorce papers, and Veronica’s father being on trial. The episode also features the return of Chuck Clayton, aka the slut shamer who hurt Veronica, Ethel, and more girls who go to Riverdale High. We get to see Betty lose control when near him and almost go off on him. Meanwhile, Archie tries to set up Jughead’s party at his house while dealing with his parents’ possible divorce. Veronica refuses to testify for her father and tries to convince her mom to tell people about Blossom’s involvement in her father’s arrest. Betty sings for Jughead at the party. Unfortunately Cheryl, Chuck, and others crash the party and cause chaos. Chuck Clayton wants revenge on Betty while Cheryl wants revenge on Veronica for stealing her cheerleaders away from her. Chuck taunts Betty at the party and she snaps at him. Betty and Jughead have tension in the episode while she plans his party. Jughead breaks Betty’s heart, which also breaks any shipper’s heart. When Cheryl traps them in their house, everyone reveals each other’s secret. Jughead’s dad really steps up in the episode as the adult at the party. Jughead and Betty reconcile at Pops. Archie and Veronica talk about their life problems at Archie’s house and they share a kiss…and a little more. Veronica ends up telling her mom that she will help out by testifying. Veronica also decides to help out the investigation with Betty. The episode ends with Archie’s mom arriving with Fred.
Overall, this was a solid episode that definitely sets up things to come. The theme of the episode is chaos as vocalized by Jughead at the beginning. Romantic chaos, family chaos, enemy chaos, etc. The romantic tension between Jughead and Betty is a solid plot point. Archie and Veronica finally start something after all the scenes with them. Archie and Veronica also struggle with their parents’ situation. Cheryl and Chuck cause chaos as they play an antagonistic role. Cheryl’s character has been very hard to judge. In one episode, she is annoying, in another, she is relatable. With the events of these past few episodes, it looks like we will be seeing more of bad-girl Cheryl. Next week’s Riverdale looks to focus more on Polly, which should refocus the show’s attention onto Jason Blossom’s death.
